The study consisted of a pond study and a laboratory study. In the pond study, sodium nitrate was applied at 2 mg/L NO3–N at 2-week intervals to rectangular ponds of 400-m2 water surface area stocked with 400 channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus fingerings and 10 grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella. Water quality, phytoplankton communities, sediment condition and fish production were compared between triplicate treatment and control ponds. The results showed that catfish production and survival rate did not differ (P>0.1) between treated and control ponds. There were higher mean concentrations of nitrate nitrogen, total nitrogen, soluble reactive phosphorus, total phosphorus, turbidity and chlorophyll a in sodium nitrate-treated ponds than in control ponds (P<0.1). Transparency was greater in control ponds (P<0.1). The pH and concentration of total alkalinity, ammonia nitrogen, and dissolved oxygen were not different between treated and control ponds (P>0.1). Environmental and agronomic evaluation of value-added nitrogen fortified poultry litter and biosolids fertilizers. $49.99 Phosphorus and N fertilization from poultry litter (PL) can cause water quality concerns, and can be especially troublesome in regions with high concentrations of poultry production. We investigated soil P loss in runoff water after long-term poultry litter (PL) applications and the associated soil P partitioning effects. To synergize PL movement out of sensitive watersheds, we transformed fresh PL into urea fortified granulated PL fertilizers with and without biosolids (BS) (PLUB and PLU, respectively), with and without a nitrification inhibitor [dicyandiamide (DCD)], and with different binding agents (lignosulfonate, urea formaldehyde or water). Nitrogen-fortified PL and BS fertilizers were compared to organic and inorganic fertilizer sources in regards to physical characteristics, nutrient runoff, and as an agronomic fertilizer. Soil P fractionation, granule crush and attrition tests, rainfall simulations, incubation, and field tests were used to test various dissertation objectives. Regarding soil-P partitioning, soil P associated with Al, reductant soluble and Ca were primarily responsible for reducing dissolved reactive P (DRP) concentrations in runoff water. Attrition and crush tests found that granular PL and BS fertilizers were physically similar to inorganic fertilizer granules currently used, such as urea and triple superphosphate, while increasing PL bulk density. Runoff simulations indicated that BS additions decreased total P and DRP losses by 50% compared to PL granules. All organic fertilizer sources had less total-P loss than triple superphosphate (24.7%). An incubation study found that limited DCD-N was mineralized during a growing season and DCD inhibited significant denitrification for 56 d. Binding agents did not have any significant effect on nutrient loss in runoff or N availability during the water quality and incubation studies. To synergize PL movement out of sensitive watersheds, we transformed fresh PL into urea fortified granulated PL fertilizers with and without biosolids (BS) (PLUB and PLU, respectively), with and without a nitrification inhibitor [dicyandiamide (DCD)], and with different binding agents (lignosulfonate, urea formaldehyde or water). Nitrogen-fortified PL and BS fertilizers were compared to organic and inorganic fertilizer sources in regards to physical characteristics, nutrient runoff, and as an agronomic fertilizer. Soil P fractionation, granule crush and attrition tests, rainfall simulations, incubation, and field tests were used to test various dissertation objectives. Regarding soil-P partitioning, soil P associated with Al, reductant soluble and Ca were primarily responsible for reducing dissolved reactive P (DRP) concentrations in runoff water. Attrition and crush tests found that granular PL and BS fertilizers were physically similar to inorganic fertilizer granules currently used, such as urea and triple superphosphate, while increasing PL bulk density. Runoff simulations indicated that BS additions decreased total P and DRP losses by 50% compared to PL granules. All organic fertilizer sources had less total-P loss than triple superphosphate (24.7%). An incubation study found that limited DCD-N was mineralized during a growing season and DCD inhibited significant denitrification for 56 d. Binding agents did not have any significant effect on nutrient loss in runoff or N availability during the water quality and incubation studies. Impacts of Root Invigoration(TM) and its individual components on the performance of red maple (Acer rubrum). $49.99 The Root Invigoration(TM) process involves soil decompaction with an air tool, amendment with organic matter and prescription fertilizer, and mulching. In the current study, we measured soil chemical and physical properties, tree characteristics, and root system responses to this process and its individual components. Treatments included Root Invigoration(TM) (AFM), mulch only (M), fertilization only (F), AirspadeRTM tillage only (A), and an untreated control (C). The experiment was conducted from 2005-2007 at four urban sites: Anderson, SC; Boston, MA; Myrtle Beach, SC and Pittsburgh, PA. Soil strength was initially reduced by Airspade RTM, mulch and AFM; however only AFM-treated soils sustained this reduction over two seasons. Across all locations, soil organic matter content was increased with AFM and mulching.;The levels of six soil nutrients were increased by Root Invigoration(TM), while one nutrient was increased by an individual treatment. Tree condition ratings were significantly higher in AFM trees than control trees by the end of 2007. In two locations, increases in dbh were also greater for AFM trees. At the end of 2006, estimated chlorophyll concentrations were higher in AFM trees than in the A or M treatments. Foliage of AFM trees had higher levels of phosphorus and potassium than foliage of fertilized trees. Mulched soils (both AFM and M) frequently had higher soil moisture content. During a drought period in 2007, pre-dawn leaf water potential was higher for M trees on two dates and for AFM trees on one. Although there were differences in root length density (cm root/cm3 soil) among treatments in 2006, there were none in 2007. Mean root diameter was increased with fertilization. Root lifespan was reduced with M and AFM treatments. Time until root browning was also reduced with A, M and AFM, however AFM merely reflected the influence of the individual treatments. M and AFM shifted a greater proportion of fine roots to the upper 33.3 cm of the soil |
