Can You use a cactus Soil mix for succulents not just cacti?
Can you use the cactus soil mix bought from the stores for succulents?
Most succulents are fine when grown in a cactus soil mix, though some will tolerate more water retention, and grow more prolifically than cacti do, and a standard or modified cactus mix would be fine.
Some of my succulents grow happily in my clay garden soil, which is often very wet, for example, such as some of the Aloes, even though they’d be fine in a drier, more open growing medium. I’d recommend that you research the needs of each individual succulent that you want to grow, and then tailor the potting mix, if it needs it, by adding some more general potting mix into it, which is likely to have a higher nutrient level than a cactus mix, as well as retain more water.

How To Use Basement Mix Basement Mix can be used in any soil-less application. It was originally developed on a drip system feeding once a day into a run to waste system. Any complete organic or refined nutrient will render superior results. Basement Mix works excellent in beds and containers of all kinds. The best method, follow this procedure and you won’t go wrong! POTS: Take a well rooted cutting and place it in a small 4 inch pot. Watering cycles will increase as the plant grows. Under normal conditions, waist high plants in three to five gallon pots will need to be watered ever three to five days. The Basement Mix works well with most popular fertilizing schedules such as Cutting Edge, Advanced Nutrients, or Pure Blend. The Basement Mix is stronger than the average soil-less mixes; however it is designed to be fed on a regular basis with a full complex nutrient program. An assessment of riparian land-use and channel condition impacts on streambank eroding lengths and recession rates in two third order rural watersheds in central Iowa. $49.99 Over the 150 year history of major agricultural activity in Iowa nearly all the native prairie (99.9%) and wetlands (95%) were lost as native plant communities were converted to row-crop agriculture. This major change from perennial to annual upland vegetation was accompanied by broad scale installation of tile drainage intended to remove moisture from saturated wetland soils, increasing available crop land. The increased removal of water by tile drainage accompanied by the increase in surface runoff caused by the loss of permanent soil cover and compaction resulted in an increase in the rate and amount of water entering stream systems. The increase in discharge overtime resulted in a series of channel adjustments (deepening & widening) to accommodate the increase in flow. Sediment contributed due to these channel adjustments, specifically from streambank erosion has been shown to be a major source of sediment in many Midwestern stream systems. The main objective of this study was to determine what impact the major past and present land use practices in the Walnut and Squaw Creek Watersheds were having on the location and rate of severe streambank erosion within the two channel systems. The location and length of severe streambank erosion was mapped along the main channels of each watershed. Eroding lengths were broke down into riparian land use categories: Coolseason grass, warmseason grass, row-crop agriculture, grazed pasture, riparian forest, and grassland-forest mix. Total stream length, sinuosity, and eroding streambank lengths were compared among all land use categories. To estimate streambank recession rates, erosion pins were installed along streambanks in four major riparian land use types identified along the main stem of Walnut Creek. Outcomes of this investigation indicate that areas with high sinuosity located directly downstream of channelized portions of the stream network were subject to longer eroding lengths with higher recession rates |

Effects of atmospheric acid deposition and single versus mixed leaf litters on foliar litter decomposition, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium dynamics in a regenerating forest. $49.99 Increases in atmospheric N deposition over the past decades have raised concerns over nitrogen (N) retention and carbon (C) and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. We conducted two litter decomposition studies at the Long-Term Soil Productivity (LTSP) study at the Fernow Experimental Forest (FEF) in West Virginia. In the LTSP study acid deposition is simulated by periodic ammonium sulfate additions (N+S). Other treatments include control (ref) (no additions or reference) and ammonium sulfate plus lime (lime). Fresh litter was collected from treatment plots in November. Air-dried litter was weighed, and placed in nylon litter bags. Litter bags were placed in treatment plots in March after snow melt. Mass loss, C, N, P and Ca dynamics were followed for 12 months.;Study 1: To understand how acid deposition interacts to affect ecosystem C, N, P, and Ca cycling and to assess the ability of lime to counteract that effect, we followed decomposition of a litter mix representative of the forest floor composition (oak 48%, yellow poplar 19%, maple 14%, magnolia 12%, cherry 4%, and birch 3%). At 6 and 7 months remaining N content in litter in N+S treatment was significantly lower than in reference and lime treatment (p <0.01) At 12 months, remaining mass was highest in lime treatment (43%) and it was significantly higher than the N+S (39%) and control (37%). Remaining C at 12 months was significantly higher in N+S (42%) treatment than in reference (36%) (p=0.0337). Remaining Ca was significantly higher in N+S treatment (42%) than in reference (36%) (p=0.0051). At 12 months, the remaining P in the N+S treatment (107%) was significantly higher than in the control (83%) and lime treatment (90%). Lower N immobilization and higher P immobilization during leaf litter decomposition in N deposition treatments indicate that high rates of atmospheric N deposition may affect nutrient dynamics during litter decomposition. Fitness consequences of genetic and phenotypic chimeras in the social amoeba, Dictyostelium discoideum. $49.99 Multicellular organisms regularly eliminate unfit or harmful cells in the process of normal development. This high level of cooperation is maintained because all cells within the organism are genetically identical and thus, have the same evolutionary interests. However, there are some multicellular organisms that develop not from a single cell but from many individuals. In the case of the social amoebae, Dictyostelium discoideum, the usually solitary amoebae aggregate with nearby cells when starving to form a motile, multicellular slug that migrates to the soil surface and forms a fruiting body consisting of a bail of spores held aloft by a stalk of dead cells. These aggregations may be a mix of genetically identical individuals or of multiple clones, called genetic chimeras. Within chimeras, a conflict may arise over which cells contribute to the reproductive spores versus the dead stalk. Previous work on D. discoideum has shown that uniclonal slugs migrate further than chimeric slugs of the same size across agar. Here we test whether this resuits in a fitness cost under more natural conditions. We examined migration of slugs across decaying leaves and soil as well as migration up through layers of these substrates, closely reflecting the natural migration of D. discoideum slugs in the wild. In most trials, chimeras performed worse than single clones. Thus, chimerism in D. discoideum should produce a fitness cost likely to be important in nature. Since D. discoideum readily mixes with multiple clones, the potential for conflict is high. Diverging evolutionary interests in chimeras could influence adaptive strategies for filling the spore and stalk roles. Here we explore the strategy for filling these roles in phenotypic chimeras, mixes of cells differing only in physical condition. We explore the fitness of D. discoideum spores and found that cells with better prospects tend to represent the subsequent generations. However, we also found that D. discoideum amoebae |
