03. Red Wiggler Worms
You need worms for a worm farm. Some worms are better at composting than others. It is important to know what type to use for your worm farm.
Although red worms and earthworms were suggested, the former, or red wigglers as they are called, are better at making compost.
Red wigglers are a better choice since they reproduce easily. They also provide plenty of nutrients that enrich the Soil. Even though earthworms are easier to find, they do not reproduce as well in a compost heap.
The red ones endure various temperatures and remain in enclosed spaces better. They are also more efficient in processing waste matter.
Another species that can be used for worm farming is the European Nightcrawler. This type of worm is used as food for birds and fishes. When nightcrawlers are used for composting, it is not as effective as the red wigglers in processing compost. Choose nightcrawlers if you are breeding live bait for fishing, otherwise stick to red wigglers if you are making compost for your garden.
While there exists a great deal of different worm species, red wigglers and nightcrawlers are most often used as they are easily found. You can get hold of young or adult worms. You may even get hold of cocoons, each holding as many as 20 eggs. However, usually only 3 or 4 worms will emerge from a cocoon.
